Target Audience Profile Part 1

The audience i have targeted are teenagers preferably aged between 16 and 19. The reason for this is because the main protagonist is aged around this particular age group (18), not only that, but teeagers around this age generally hold more interest in watching films as opposed to older people. I will be going into further detail about the type of teenagers that would watch this film.

Male character

My name is Elliot, I am 16 years of age and currently studying at Langley boys. The subjects I am studying are GCSE Media, Photography and Music. I enjoy these subjects as i feel it would contribute towards what i want to do in sixth form which are the following A levels; Media, BTec sport and Photography. I believe chosing the these subjects will help me understand what i want to do in the future which is to become a film or music producer. my favourite genre of film would have to be thrillers becsue the suspense and tension in them. I also enjoy going out with my friends and watching thriller films with them because they also get very scared when watching them. The main things i would expect in a thriller is not a wide use of lighting, very little blood shed or seen but some form of suspision created throughout the film. I enjoy classical music however my friends insult me because I listen to a different genre of music to them. I particularly enjoy playing cricket, i am currnetly in the under 17's national cricket team for England. This for me is extremely exciting as if all doesnt go well with my aspirations to become a film producer, i could take on cricket as a career.

My name is Kendra am 17 years old. I am in sixth form and studying at Harris Upper Norwood. I had gotten all A's in GCSE. The subjects i studied were History, French and Business and communications. I am now studying A level Socialology, Government and politics and Law. I believe choosing these subjects will push me in the right directions to make my aspirations of becoming a lawyer, come true. I do enjoy watching films, particularly with my family. I prefer watching thrillers over horrors becauase i like when films require seriouis contemplating. I also like when they may not have a story behind it, this is why i prefer abstract films over narrative as I can think about what is really happening. I listen to a wide variety however i do prefer American Hip-Hop/rap, this is because i like annotating some of the things rappers quote for example, Kendrick lamar is an influential rapper which speaks from about the things that are currently going on int the world and ways of preventing them, this is why i would consider him as an influential role model particularly for teenagers like myself.



 

Treatment

It is currently 3:30pm, the 24th November 2015 Daniel Brown (the protagonist) is looking for his friend Sean. Sean is Daniel's closest friend and Daniel is willing to put everything on the line in order to find some crucial information to what could have happened to him and why he is missing. Daniel is in Beckenham park, looking for Sean as this is where Sean used to go through in order to get home quicker. It was the night of 23rd of November, Sean had came from a detention, this finished around 5pm therefore he had to rush home however Sean never made it home. Daniel is now on a quest to find his best friend in possibly one of the last places he was known to be. The clues he found were his diary, this is significant as Daniel never knew that Sean had kept such a big secret from him. Daniel is in Beckenham park for hours trying to look for anything else which could lead to an answer. Although Sean's disappearance has nearly been over 24 hours and Daniel feels it is necessary to contact the police. Will Daniel ever find him Sean?

 THE LOST

Lighting analysis

The film I will be analysing is Paranormal activity: The marked ones. This is a supernatural horror which takes place in America. The aspect that makes this film a lot more terrifying is the choice of lighting. The there isn't a lot of lighting used in most scenes, this creates suspension and tension throughout the film. In the trailer, the producers intend on captivating you through certain aspect of the film, in this case, the effective use of lighting. Although there isn't much lighting used in this trailer, the constant use of torches have a significant impact in the trailer and film as it demonstrates fear and insecurity. As the trailer starts, you can notice very few light is used and this generally occurs throughout the trailer of this film. The connotations of dark surroundings could be fear- doesn't have a positive feeling to it. The constant use of low key lighting creates an atmospheric and intense mood in a film- this is why these produces had decided to use constant low key lighting. 

Character profile

The Lost: the main character Daniel Brown

Daniel Brown is a young man aged 18. Daniel is a cunning person who is willing to sacrifice his needs in order to find his friend. Although at first he has no sense of direction of where to look for his friend, he uses the people he knows and his surroundings to the best of his ability. Daniel is also very good at putting different situations together to get a complete image. This means that although Daniel finds singular clues throughout his search, he is able to put clues together to help him get closer to his friend. Daniel is also able to infer clues; this means that Daniel is able to think out of the box, which helps him use clues beyond their physical abilities.
Although Daniel is hurt by his friend missing, he is also aware of the abilities he has and he finds a way to embrace his situation by passionately trying to solve the mystery of his beloved friend. Daniel is also an educated person who uses his knowledge of subjects such as science to help him find out who was last interacting with his friend. Daniel looks at fingerprints on the clues he finds to help him locate his friend.
Overall Daniel is a hard working young man who is willing to go the extra mile in order to find his friend. This results in Daniel always inferring information throughout the film in the attempt to find his friend.

Location analysis

In our title sequence for our movie: The lost, we will be using this bridge in Riverview park. we will be using this location because this bridge isn't used often by the public. The main character in The lost: Daniel Brown will walk over this bridge to look for clues in Riverview park to help him find his missing friend Sean. In our title sequence this bridge will represent an isolated setting. This will help us to reach the expectations of our target audience because isolated settings is an important convention of a Thriller.

We will be using this footpath in our title sequence because it will lead our main character Daniel Brown to the first location in Riverview park where he will find a clue to help him find his missing friend Sean.

We will be using this broken down tree as a place where a clue will found by Daniel Brown. The reason why were using this tree for a shot is because its a unique location, which will allude to the idea of a mystery in our film The Lost. Our main character Daniel Brown will find Sean's phone under the tree. This will then make the audience have questions in their mind such as why was Sean's phone under the tree, this will then allude to the idea that our film: The Lost will be a Thriller involving a mystery.

This is a footpath we will also be using in our title sequence. The reason why we will be using this footpath is because the main character Daniel Brown will walk along this footpath to reach a river. This is where he will find another clue which is another item of Sean's.

Another location we will use in Riverview park is a river. This will be the second location where Daniel will find a clue to help him solve the mystery in our film: The Lost. The reason why we will be using this river is because it alludes to the idea of danger. This river will make our target audience ask themselves questions such as: why was Sean near the river and how long has this item been there?

Inspiration

The film I have chosen for inspiration is frailty. This is a physiological thriller which makes you contemplate about what is really going on in the film and make you want to know more as the film progresses. This film was set in Texas and in this area, lived a family of two boys and a father, their mother passed away. As I continued to watch the film the things I thought could be inspiring for my title sequence is the constant use of the enigma code- this is essentially when a there may be something in the film that may raise suspicion and leaving the audience asking questions. I believe using the enigma code in my title sequence would indubitably be beneficial as the less information given, the more the audience would want to know about what may happen next. Also, the physiological twist to this film, in my opinion, gave this film a higher ranking out of all the thriller films- The religious background to this film made the audience feel a lot of suspense throughout the film. The locations used is also inspiring as some of them are either in the cemetery or a desolate area- I believe that having locations like these would definitely raise tension if they were to be in my  thriller title sequence. In this film, they also included a hidden basement which could link to concealing and hiding something from others in the film for example the police officer goes down there but not knowing that he would die as the film progressed. Having some form of area in which could be used where no one would know of or go to would also be a good asset in my title sequence as It could show a sign of secrecy in the main character. 

Missing analysis

In 'The Missing', the music used could suggest that there could be something bad occurring throughout the series. also the use of a female singer could be a metaphor for the person that is missing- he/she could be a kind, sensitive person. the lack of percussion could imply that this is a serious matter as percussion is generally used to create an uplifting mood. At the beginning of the title sequence, the camera angle used is putting ourselves in the position of the child in the seat looking towards the sky- this is significant as this is at the beginning therefore the child's parents know where he is however later on in the title sequence, there are close ups of where the missing child would used to go for example, there was a close up of an inflated ring in the swimming pool however this is a vital aspect as it shows no child in it- this is when the audience could come to the conclusion that there is a child missing. The use of high angles could show the child's insignificant in comparison to the rest of the world and where they currently are. Another camera angle used is the close up of the melted ice- cream, this is compelling as it is common cliché that most children drop their ice- cream however the fact that it has melted and almost changed from a lighter shade to a darker shade of pink could symbolise how time has gone past and the child is still missing. Over the shoulder is used to suggest that someone is trying to find and perhaps kidnap this lost child roaming the streets looking for his parents. The use of editing from this title sequence is highly significant as it puts us in the perspective of the child so we are almost with the child. An example for this could be the image of the water however the camera angle used could suggest that there is someone in the water. From this picture, you could infer that this is probably one of many ways which the child could potentially been murders through asphyxiation in the water.   

What is the difference between a horror and a thriller film

Horror vs Thriller

Horror and thriller films are two types of genres that have some similarities for instance, primarily, it is expected in both genres that there should be some tension and suspense throughout watching either a horror or a thriller. 


however, there are many differences between thriller films and horror films that make these films differentiate in a variety of ways, although they seem analogous, there are many aspects which justify otherwise. The first element that varies in both themes are that thriller films has more of a psychological twist to it which requires more thorough thinking and exclamation as to what may occur later on in the film whereas in a horror film consists of more blood and carnage. A good example of a thriller is the film 'psycho', this is a psychological thriller and the constant use of enigma could create suspense and tension. In my opinion, this is a key key aspect which makes a thriller different from a horror. A good example of a horror could be 'The Texas chainsaw massacre'- this is essentially a film which contains a plethora of killings with no need to contemplate what might occur and what is happening as the audience watch it. 

Typography analysis

The two films I will be analysing are Zombieland and fringe.

Typography is essentially the art and movement of words.
 A prime example of a film that uses this could be zombieland. They use it in the film to help us understand exactly what is going on- a zombie apocalypse. The person who created this opening title sequence uses specific colours to connote what type of genre this is. The connotations of red are danger and murder- this is the predominant colour used to infer that there will be some form of violence as the film progresses. Also, in this opening title sequence, the words are synchronised with the character or object movement so when ever something for example the spilling of the drink in this sequence, as the beverage empties out and goes down towards the bottom of the screen, the words follow in the same direction. 

The other film that has a innovative use of typography is fringe. In this films opening title sequence there is not much movement with the words however the words in itself used could help us identify the type of genre this film is. The use of typography in the objects however are more explosive in comparison to the words used as it also helps us acknowledge what this film is about. The use of black font doesn't give us information as to the type of genre this is. Finally, the use of algebraic expressions and equations gives us the impression that this is a science related film (science fiction). 

Title sequence

Dexter

In Dexter's title sequence, he starts with his daily routine however with a twist...

This picture shows his name yet it appears to be blood spatter around it. this could suggest some form of killing/ severe injury. This picture also shows that his name is in red and is contrasting with the white background. this could simply imply Dexter is different and contrasts with the world as it is pure (reason why the background is white) and his name is written in luminous red. The connotations of red is passion- he is known for having a desire for killing people.

In this picture, he is seen tightening what the audience believes to be some form of rope however, as the title sequence progresses, he is just beginning flossing his teeth- the camera shot (close up) makes the audience assume that he is plotting something yet all he is doing is his morning routine. Although he is not normal, he still does the regular things a normal person would. This helps us understand how methodical he is. 

 

he is cutting something and due to the camera angle used, the audience presume he is cutting up a body, (this is what he does in the show) however he is just making breakfast- this is a vital picture as it portrays how sadistic this character is. 

 In this picture, it shows blood spatter from Dexter shaving however the camera heavily focuses on blood spatter next to the sink.This is a highly significant picture as it symbolises murder. 

True detective

From this picture, it looks like what appears to be a factory or power station in the far distance however the person who edited this picture didn't want the focal point to be this factory however if you look closely, you an just see a silhouette of a character presumably on this show. As this is the first picture, it is hard to make a link or assumption as to what this show could be about.

This picture shows a high angle view of Louisiana at night time. Also in the picture you can see what seems to be a smoke cloud covering part of the city. The smoke could symbolize the separation or difference in that particular area compared to the rest of the city. This picture could also link to the first picture shown as it has a power station.

I can infer from this picture that this is the protagonist and i can also assume that because part of his face is being shown in this picture, he could be involved in some form of murder and he is attempting to conceal his identity. 

 

From this picture it shows a faded image of a man however the main focal point is the upside down cross. The meaning of an upside down cross could be there is some demonic activity involved. Although there inst any demonic activity involved, there is some murdering involved and people could perceive this as demonic exercise involved. 

This picture simply shows a mans head in flames. As this is the final picture from the title, this could suggest that either the protagonist or someone very important will get killed in this show. Also the connotations of fire from a Christians perspective are linking to hell- if someone has done something wrong and something bad does always occur throughout this drama, you will be condemned for your bad doings.
